Trump strongly hinted at birtherism during a March 17, 2011 Good Morning Americainterview, but stopped short of demanding to see then-President Obama‘s birth certificate:
On the March 23, 2011 edition of ABC’s The View, co-host Joy Behar dragged Trump’s innuendos about Obama into the light by quoting those insinuations, and then directly asking him “Are you a birther?”
Trump first complained that “birthers” are derided as idiots, then asked “Why doesn’t he show his birth certificate?”
“Why should he have to?” co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked.
After a lot of crosstalk, Trump flatly declared “I want him to show his birth certificate. I want him to show his birth certificate. There’s something on that birth certificate that he doesn’t like.”
“That’s a terrible thing to say,” Barbara Walters said.
Trump, addressing Goldberg, said “Whoopi I love you, I’m telling you…”
“I love you too,” Goldberg interrupted, and added “I think that’s the biggest pile of dog mess I’ve heard in ages.”
As Trump continued to rant, Goldberg sarcastically said “It’s not cuz he’s black.”
“It has nothing to do with that,” Trump insisted.
“Has any white president asked to be shown the birth certificate?” Goldberg asked. “When they become the president of the United States of America you know that he’s American, I’m sorry, that’s BS.”
It wasn’t long before Trump rocketed to the top of Republican primary polls, despite not even being a declared candidate at the time. All of that came to an abrupt end a few weeks later when President Obama released his long-form birth certificate, then spent a weekend mocking Trump at the White House.
