On Friday afternoon’s edition of CNN Newsroom With Brooke Baldwin, both Borger and host Brooke Baldwin struggled to sort out Trump’s strange announcement. After CNN National Security Correspondent Kylie Atwood tried to explain Trump’s announcement, Baldwin asked Borger for her thoughts.
“My colleagues and I have been rushing around and trying to figure out who knew what when about this,” Borger said, “and it seems that this takes everything to kind of a new level of dysfunction that if the president can tweet something about his own policy on sanctions, and nobody quite understands what it means, how do you run foreign policy?”
Trump’s tweet incorrectly statedthat “It was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large scale Sanctions would be added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea,” when what was actually announced(yesterday) was the designation of two Chinese companies under existing sanctions.
“I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!” Trump added in his tweet, which created the confusion that Borger and Baldwin expressed, and of current reporting is to be believed, the confusion that everyone in Trump’s administration appears to be experiencing.
